That you can wish for Piano Music with your Blu-ray player
not more that the performance of Beethoven Piano concertos by legendary Daniel Barenboim
in the perfection of HD Video quality, also for more piano music on blu-ray you really need to hear
this great 7.1 DTS-HD Audiophile releases:
Grieg - Piano Concerto / Symphonic Dances / In Autumn - Acoustic Reality Experience [Blu-ray]
Tchaikovsky - Piano Concertos Nos. 1&3 - Acoustic Reality Experience [7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Disc] [Blu-ray]
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No.25 / Piano Sonatas - Acoustic Reality Experience [7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Disc] [Blu-ray]

Excellent Beethoven, Barenboim and Berliners, bad Medici March 28, 2010 Tony Black (Belgrade, Serbia) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having been thrilled by the recent BBC recordings of Barenboim and the Staatskapelle playing the Beethoven concertos in London's Festival Hall, I was keen to buy this disc, and a new Blu-Ray player to play it on.
Nearly everything about this BRD is superb. The performances are brilliant, the filming and sound recording are superb, so realistic that you can practically feel the sweat rolling down Barenboim's face. There's a lot of that, as, clearly, it was very hot under the spotlights in Bochum's modernistic Jahrhundert Halle, and he's a really physical player-conductor.
I'm not expert enough to evaluate the performances, but I liked them very much indeed. I also liked the surroundings, and the "clash" between their modernism and the somewhat archaic formality of orchestral players in bow ties and tails. DB himself is less formally dressed, as if to provide a contrast.
However, I reserve a big black mark for Medici, the publishers (and take off 1 star). Why oh why did they omit a proper menu, by which those of us with less-complicated BRD players can navigate our way round the contents? I think they thereby did a disservice - a major disservice - to their customers, to the performers (and the composer!), and to the film production team who have done so well. Perhaps Medici could repair this disgraceful omission in future editions ... ?
Otherwise, you won't get better or more "immediate" Beethoven than this.
Incredible March 26, 2010 David M. Calvert-Orange (Yorkshire) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cannot understand how this has lost 1 star it is FANTASTIC. Sure you can grumble about technicalities such as the menu BUT the performances are absolutely wonderful and in bly ray surround sound WOW!!!!!!!!
Wonderful performance but lousy DVD February 24, 2010 Chris (South Africa) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me first say that the performances by the Staatskapelle Berlin and Daniel Barenboim are SUPERB but are spoilt by the shocking conditions under which the performance was given! If you are really desperate to have all of Beethoven's five piano concerti on one DVD in high definition, then go ahead and buy this one -- but be warned, this DVD does NOT have a menu. On loading the disk one has a choice of PLAY or TRAILERS, and that is all. The five concerti run one after the other without any breaks other than applause which then leads directly to the next concerto. Only one concerto has an introductory screen which tells the viewer which piano concerto is going to be played. All the others have no title whatsoever, only the movements such as allegro or Adagio etc. The only way one can know which concerto is being played is by referring to the booklet which comes with the DVD where each movement of each concerto is listed by chapter number. A tip here if you want to play a particular concerto, is to go directly to the listed chapter and then rewind back a few seconds in order to get Daniel Barenboim walking to the podium before starting the concerto.
Good grief Medici Arts, what have you done? Don't you know how to put a menu onto a DVD, or do you think the public is so silly that they think the audience sat there for THREE HOURS and EIGHTEEN MINUTES without a break to stretch their legs or go for a leak or a coffee?
Now for some more criticism. The Yahrhunderthalle (Century hall) in Bochum looks like the inside of a factory with steel barred walkways going over the heads of the audience and daylight coming through the windows high up close to the ceiling. The background to the orchestra consists of plywood boards - yech!! If you can ignore all this, then the performance is truly enjoyable.
Please read my review of the Herbert Karajan Memorial Concert - also by Medici Arts.
I have allmost nothing to add February 6, 2010 Hary Joseph 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first (from januar) reviewer said it.
I have 7.1 System with standard DTS (not HD). Stil, excellent sound.
And all the 5 Concertos on 1 Disc!
